Johannisberg

Description (detail)

Denis Mercier’s Johannisberg showcases the full-bodied side of the Sylvaner grape. The Goubing and Pradec vineyards produce a white wine full of character, with delicate floral aromas, ripe fruit and the almond note so typical of Johannisberg. On the palate, it is round, full-bodied and generous, with little overt acidity and a delicately tart finish reminiscent of almonds. This is not a zesty aperitif wine, but a vinous Johannisberg with substance and gastronomic appeal.

A Word from the Winemaker

Here’s what the Mercier family has to say about this wine

Denis Mercier describes the Johannisberg as the ‘pride of Valais’ and says it was the first variety he planted in 1984.

Our story

What connects us with this winery...

Denis Mercier SA

The eight-hectare vineyard with more than 50 plots around the town of Sierre was founded in 1982. The vines are mainly located in two places: Pradec, around the castle of Mercier, and Goubing, near our cellar.

Our soils are clayey and calcareous, dry and deep. For many years, the surface of the soil has been covered with natural vegetation. The entire vineyard is cultivated in an environmentally friendly way as far as possible. Caring for nature is very important to us.

The top priority for the production of quality grapes is to reduce the quantity of grapes, if necessary, right from the start in order to achieve a maximum of concentrated aromas. Each grape variety needs its own acclimatization in a given environment in order to develop its personal organoleptic potential.

The grape harvest from our plots is excellent. Our oenologist devotes her care to fermentation management in order to specifically highlight the authenticity of each terroir. The work in the wine cellar and in the vines is carried out with great sensitivity. The full aroma of individual wines is achieved by ageing in barriques.

A visit to our estate is much more than just a tasting. It is a pleasure and a moment of exchange.
Come and discover our treasures.

Johannisberg

«The Sunday wine of the Valais»

Johannisberg: This is what the Valaisans call their Sylvaner, which originally comes from Transylvania. After Chasselas, Johannisberg is the most widespread white grape variety in our region.

It is an ideal accompaniment to asparagus, poultry or fish in sauce. The Johannisberg develops its outstanding qualities on dry, gravelly soils, which it finds on selected slopes, especially in the Chamoson region. It is characterised by its varietal, charming flavour, with nuances of herbal tea and a seductive background of fruit and almond aromas. Its complexity, richness and ageing potential, well over twenty years, are incredible!

In the past, people in Valais drank Fendant during the week and Johannisberg on Sunday. The longer, the more the Valaisans treat themselves to a glas of Johannisberg during the week...
