Words from the winemaker

What Maria Kanzso-Rüdisühli says about this wine

Lagrein is one of the most interesting, great Alpine grape varieties, which produces full-bodied, powerful and aromatic red wines of exceptional quality. This wine is a real insider tip.

Our story

What connects us with this winery...

We were recently sitting in a restaurant and discovered a Valais Lagrein on the menu. We hadn't even heard of it before - so we tried it straight away... And we were thrilled! We were even more surprised when we realised that we had cooked the winemakers' wedding dinner years ago. We are therefore particularly pleased to now have their wine on our menu and to be able to serve it to our guests. Do you already know this Lagrein? If not, you should definitely try it!

M&M organic wines

M&M-Bioweine was founded in 2008 by Mike and Maria Kanzso-Rüdisühli. Together with their family members and friends, they cultivate plots in the Vispertal, Visperterminen and St. German on the Lötschberg Südrampe. The entire vineyard is cultivated and cared for according to federal organic guidelines. Their winery is the first certified organic winery in the Upper Valais and they specialize in old grape varieties from the Upper Valais and their organic cultivation.

After training as a winemaker and master winemaker, Mike Kanzso gained experience at various wineries around the world. These include Davaz (Fläsch), Stonyridge (New Zealand), La Torre Vini, Marcel Zanolari (Veltlin/Poschiavo, biodynamic), Manincor (Kaltern, South Tyrol, biodynamic), Chanton-Weine (Visp) and Cave du Rhodan (Salgesch).

Maria Kanzso-Rüdisühli grew up on a farm in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley with 11 siblings and learned about vegetable growing from scratch. After completing her commercial training, she went on to train as a medical masseuse and Qigong teacher. At the same time, Maria was one of the best sport climbers in Switzerland, a member of the national team and an active World Cup climber. They still explore the numerous crags in Valais today, as long as their work in the vineyards allows it. In the meantime, Maria has also trained to become a specialist in handling the vines and working in the cellar. She is also responsible for the beautiful garnishes that are served at tastings at the winery, as they come from their own garden.

Lagrein

«Highness of the sun terraces!»

Lagrein was probably named after the Lagarina Valley in Trentino, but we don't know for sure. What is certain is that South Tyrol and Trentino have always been the stronghold of this grape. It feels at home in warm locations, where it develops an intense aroma of cherry and wild berries, complemented by a distinctive scent of violets. The Lagrein is a real seducer on the palate, full-bodied, velvety and round. Skilful barrique ageing enriches it with spicy nuances. And: Lagrein is a real gourmet wine: whether ragout with polenta, game dishes or mature cheese, they all love this red charmer.

Warm, southern alpine locations are not only found in South Tyrol, but also here in Valais...!
