More about the wine cellar

Cave Caloz

The Caloz family has been practicing environmentally friendly viticulture for three generations. The focus is on protecting the earth and people. From hand-picked grapes, which are processed in their own cellar, they produce wines that give pleasure. The wine cellar is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, which is characterized by passion and hard work.

Sandrine Caloz took over the winery in 2013 after completing her studies in viticulture and oenology. After an internship in Thurgau and a trip to Australia, she returned to the family business. She is fascinated by the diversity of Valais grape varieties and the limestone terroir of the region. Every vintage offers her a new challenge and the chance to express her experiences in wine.

Sandrine is one of the best organic winegrowers in Switzerland. She owes this dedication to her father Conrad, who partially converted the winery to organic back in the 1990s. The entire winery has been certified by "Bio Suisse" since 2017. In 2019, she was named "Swiss Organic Winemaker of the Year". Despite challenges such as the lack of water in Valais, Sandrine sees the soil as a valuable heritage that contributes to the quality of the grapes.

The plots around Miège are full of fragrant herbs and flowers that grow between the rows of vines. Once a year, you even come across sheep in the vineyards. The advantage: they fertilize the soil and keep it free of weeds. "And they bring life to the vineyard," adds Sandrine Caloz ambiguously. She is more than enthusiastic about her work here in Valais. By the diversity of the Valais grape varieties, but also by the exclusive, very calcareous terroir of the Sierre region. No less exciting for the dynamic winemaker: the challenges and opportunities that each vintage brings with it - she wants to express nothing less than the experience of an entire year in her wines.

More about the grape variety

Malvoisie / Pinot Gris

«A must for wine connoisseurs»

Like Pinot blanc, Pinot Gris is a spontaneous genetic mutation of Pinot Noir that has changed colour. Like the Pinot Noir, the Pinot Gris has compact grapes. It grows on the best, hottest and well-ventilated slopes of the Valais.

The wonderful wine made from this variety is called Malvoisie in Valais. Almost always harvested overripe, sometimes even with the famous noble rot, Malvoisie offers a complex bouquet with notes of quince jelly, mirabelle jam, honey, candied fruits and oriental spices. On the palate, it impresses with lushness and sweetness... There are also a few (few) dry Malvoisie wines (also called Pinot Gris in Valais) that are worth discovering. Whether sweet or dry; these concentrated, vinous, powerful wines with a lot of melting turn their force into the most beautiful harmony after a few years in the cellar.
