More about the wine cellar

Cave L'Orpailleur

Together with his brother David, Frédéric Dumoulin continues the journey that their parents Madeleine and Germain began in 1959 with enthusiasm and respect. Understanding where you come from in order to know where you are going, the pioneering spirit of the previous generation animates and motivates our two prospectors every day.

As self-pressers, they produce wines from grapes grown on their own 28 hectares of vines. This guarantees careful and quality-oriented care and cultivation of each plot. The uncompromising winemaking technique and appropriate cellar equipment contribute to the good reputation of Orpailleur wines. Skin maceration, temperature control, careful ageing, our own bottling - here, technology is at the service of the terroir. The team spirit, good humor and love of work give the wine that certain something. That is why L'Orpailleur is a competent team, dynamic, welded together, guided by the idea of giving pleasure to themselves and the world. Since then, L'Orpailleur has won many awards and medals, as well as the hearts and palates of a loyal clientele. The family spirit and passion for wine are a legacy that will be nurtured and passed on to future generations. Or as Frédéric Dumoulin puts it: "Wine is a medicine for the soul. Available without a prescription, it makes life more pleasant and improves people."

More about the grape variety

Merlot

«The classic red wine grape par excellence»

The red grape variety probably originates from France; it was first mentioned in documents in the 14th century. Its full name is Merlot Noir, but it is not directly related to the white Merlot Blanc. The name is derived from the French word for blackbird (merle), because these birds like to nibble the early ripening berries. It probably comes from a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and another Cabernet variety.

Merlot is the third most widely grown grape variety in France and the most widely grown in the Bordeaux region. In the French region of Pomerol, one of the best and most expensive red wines in the world is made from it, Château Pétrus.

Merlot belongs to the Cabernet family and is supported by smooth, silky tannins. However, it has less tannin, lower acidity and less longevity than Cabernet wines, but a higher alcohol level. Merlot owes its success to its beautiful, dark robe with a violet hue, its vinous character and its aromas of wild berries and chocolate.
