Viognier «trip the light fantastic»

Isabella & Stéphane Kellenberger, Vin d’oeuvre, Leuk Stadt
Description (detail)

The Viognier ‘trip the light fantastic’ showcases the aromatic grape variety at its most elegant from the Valais region. Ripe apricot and yellow peach blend with floral notes and subtle spice. On the palate, it displays the fullness typical of Viognier and a soft, creamy texture, without ever becoming heavy. Mineral freshness and careful ageing lend it structure and length. An expressive white wine that strikes a balance between seduction and elegance – aromatic, yet by no means overpowering.

A Word from the Winemaker

Here’s what Isabella & Stéphane Kellenberger have to say about this wine

Not their exact words, but fascinating nonetheless:

The Viognier is a relatively new project at Vin d’Œuvre. Isabella and Stéphane replanted the variety; their Viognier has been on sale since 2018. This fits in very well with the winery’s history: both are qualified oenologists, but neither comes from a family of winegrowers. They have to reconcile their differing preferences – Isabella loves intense fruit and length, whilst Stéphane prefers more delicate, complex and mature wines – with every wine they make. Isabella says: “At first, it took what felt like an eternity, but we’ve since found common ground and consistently achieve the necessary harmony.”
I find this statement particularly apt when it comes to the Viognier: fruit and opulence on the one hand, finesse and structure on the other.

Vin d'Oeuvre, Leuk town

Isabella & Stéphane Kellenberger from the Vin d'oeuvre winery in Leuk Stadt are happy to share their passion... because they are available in bottles, in white and red, contemporary or more traditional, ready to enjoy immediately or for storage - tailored to a variety of tastes.

The two met while studying oenology in Vaud. Their relationship is no longer just professional, but also personal. They have two children. Their common strengths lie in the breadth of their individual professional experience, their different interests and the contrasting nature of their personal traits, which nevertheless harmonize perfectly, just like in a good wine.

They produce 17 different wines from indigenous and international grape varieties at their family winery Vin d'oeuvre in Leuk. They travel miles for good wine, as their vineyards stretch from Fully in the Lower Valais to Visperterminen in the Upper Valais - in short, through the entire Valais.

Vin d'oeuvre is a play on words made up of the French "vin" (wine) and "oeuvre" (work). It deliberately alludes to "main d'oeuvre" (craft) and "chef d'oeuvre" (masterpiece). Isabella & Stéphane are vin d'oeuvre, because that is exactly what their wines want to convey: Top quality paired with race and elegance - gained through their work in the vines and in the cellar.

Viognier

«Almost extinct, now popular worldwide»

Viognier, a white wine variety mainly cultivated in the Rhône, is one of the most aromatic, complex and at the same time powerful white grape varieties. The wine produced from it is usually high in alcohol, has a strong colour and a distinctive flavour. It is characterised by its aromatic bouquet, which can sometimes be reminiscent of apricots, peaches and floral aromas (especially violets or lily of the valley).

In the northern Côtes du Rhône, Viognier is made into some of the most expensive white wines in France, for example Château Grillet.
