Heida glacier wine

Description (detail)

The Chantons' flagship wine: Josef-Marie Chanton gave this exceptional wine its reputation. In 1964, he planted his first Heidarebberg vineyard above Visp. The name "glacier wine" comes from the fact that it has a view of the
glaciers. When young, the wine is elegant, fresh, aggressive, pleasing, buttery, and with light notes of pepper, quince, and smoke. But it outlasts our time. When aged, it is a proud wine with a dense body and distinctive exotic fruits.

Chanton wines

Creative, courageous and exceptionally talented, the Chantons have been cultivating unique grape varieties worldwide since 1944, now in their third generation. At the end of the 1970s, Josef-Marie Chanton, son of company founder Oskar, breathed new life into the Lafnetscha grape variety. Over the course of the 1980s, he vinified Himbertscha, Gwäss and later Eyholzer Roter and Plantscher, four other grape varieties that had fallen into oblivion. A pioneering achievement and a talent that lives on in the family business: since 2008, his son Mario Chanton has been managing the winery and actively helping to shape the individual Chanton philosophy and the family's wine knowledge. GaultMillau calls him the "guardian of the terroir".

With his vision, Josef-Marie Chanton led the winery to the successful and modern business it is today. Quality and rarities have always been his top priority. His wife Marlis Chanton was responsible for the external appearance of the company, the labels and the interior design. She implemented the idea of transferring the character of the wine to the labels with young artists. Mario Chanton does not simply continue traditions. He is looking for new ways to realize his ideas, courageously like his father. The first successes are already emerging.

More about the grape variety

Heida / Païen

«The pearl of alpine wines»

The grape variety known in Valais as Heida is called Savagnin in the French Jura or Traminer in Alsace and Palatinate and is rightly called the pearl of Alpine wines. The grape variety originally comes from the French Jura, presumably with pre-Christian origins, hence the name Heida wine - Heida. It used to be planted almost exclusively in the vineyards of the Upper Valais (Visperterminen), is currently experiencing a great upswing, especially in the French-speaking part of the Valais. There it is called Païen. The wine is light and aromatic with wild, rustic notes; aromas of dry rye bread, dried fruits, citrus fruits and exotic fruits. In the mouth it presents itself with a nice length, combining vinosity, lively freshness and a powerful body. It is characterised by a good acidity and tastes good both young and after a few years of ageing.
