Syrah Vielle Vigne 2018

Simon Maye & Fils, Saint-Pierre-de-Clages
Description (detail)

The 2018 Syrah Vieilles Vignes comes from the old vines of the Prés-des-Pierres vineyard in Chamoson, whose dry, chalky gravel soils lend the wine its characteristic freshness and minerality.
The 2018 vintage is dark in colour and expressive: ripe black fruits combine with pepper, smoke and the spicy, meaty nuances typical of Syrah. On the palate, it has plenty of body and a velvety texture, yet remains fresh and precise thanks to its lively acidity. Fine-grained tannins lead into a long, juicy finish. As it matures in the bottle, it is gaining increasing finesse and complexity. A very classic, characterful interpretation of Syrah from Chamoson.

The Syrah Vieilles Vignes is one of Simon Maye’s iconic wines. In 2007, the Grand Jury Européen awarded it first place at an international Syrah tasting – ahead of internationally renowned Syrah wines. It is also included in the Mémoire des Vins Suisses, which selects wines on the basis of their exceptional ageing potential and significance for Swiss viticulture.

A word from the winemaker

Here’s what Raphaël has to say about this wine

Speaking about Yves Beck at a tasting, Raphaël says: “Rhône roots in Valais” – the old Syrah vines at Prés-des-Pierres trace their origins back to clones selected by the legendary Rhône producers Chapoutier and Chave. In the chalky, gravelly soil of Chamoson, the variety has developed its very own Valaisan identity.

Our story

What connects us with this winery...

Three generations, a very clear vision of wine. Since 1948, Simon Maye & Fils has stood for the courage to do things differently. What was once considered unusual by the founder, Simon, has developed into one of the most renowned wineries in Valais. Today, his grandson Raphaël carries on this legacy – the only one of twelve grandchildren to do so – with great respect for the old vines and a desire not simply to copy his predecessors’ wines, but to develop them further. His grandfather gave him a piece of advice to guide him on this path: ‘You will never do the same as I did. You will do it better.’

Our shared story is only just beginning. At a JRE event, we had the pleasure of meeting Raphaël Maye in person – we sat together at a table, exchanged ideas and, in doing so, discovered not only his wines but also the man and the philosophy behind them. Today, we are proud to feature two of his magnificent wines on our wine list. Where will this new partnership take us? That remains to be seen. But we look forward to continuing to write this story together.

More about the wine cellar

Simon Maye & Fils

The family winery Simon Maye & Fils was founded in 1948 by Simon Maye in Chamoson - with just four hectares of vines and the clear goal of prioritising quality over quantity. As a trained lawyer and career changer, he focussed on innovation early on: drip irrigation, low yields, international inspiration - and uncompromising respect for the terroir. Together with other winegrowers, he founded the Confrérie St-Théodule, an association dedicated to excellence in Valais viticulture.

His sons Axel and Jean-François joined the business in the late 1970s. They professionalised the cellar technology, expanded the vineyard area to over ten hectares and, as pioneers, planted the first Syrah vines in the region in 1983. Their uncompromising pursuit of quality and site typicity brought the winery international recognition - for example as Swiss Winemaker of the Year in 2004 and with multiple awards for the Syrah Vieilles Vignes.

Since 2015, Raphaël Maye, the third generation, has been running the winery with new vigour and biodynamic awareness. As a qualified oenologist, he pursues a clear, reductive style in the cellar, focussing on spontaneous fermentation, minimal intervention and the authentic expression of the soils from Chamoson to Ardon. His partner Nadine takes care of reception, sales and communication with sensitivity.

What remains is the signature of a family business that has been building on finesse, precision and inner conviction for over 75 years - and that reinterprets a piece of Valais wine culture with every vintage.

Syrah

«For powerful wines of character»

Syrah is a grape variety that is found all over the world. However, it is in the upper part of the Côtes-du-Rhône that it has become most established. Although it is rare in Valais, here, in the best sites, the Syrah has found all the conditions to show its characteristics to their best advantage.

The wine presents itself in a dark, slightly violet colour with a strong body and spicy notes and sufficient tannins. This allows the wine to be stored for several years. On the nose it expresses wonderful notes of spices, black pepper and wild berries. Powerful and distinguished.
