Zweigelt

Description (detail)

Zweigelt has now found its way from Austria to us in Valais: almost 1,000 vines in Varen supply the grapes for this great red wine.

The Baumann family presses the large Zweigelt grapes to produce a deep dark wine with a fruity bouquet and a hint of pepper. On the palate, connoisseurs can expect juicy fruit notes paired with a delicate spiciness. The full body is supported by a fine acidity and elegantly rounded off by velvety tannins.

This distinctive wine is an excellent accompaniment to roasted meat, game specialties, and Italian pasta dishes.

What Roman Baumann says about this wine

A Valais Zweigelt is a must-try!

Our story

What connects us with this winery...

Our employee Augusto often works at the Diroso winery in his free time and he introduced us to it. We admire the Baumann family's great commitment to sustainability in dealing with flora and fauna and we can particularly recommend their white PIWI wines to you.

DIROSO Winery

As winegrowers, the Baumann family works in and with nature all year round. Sustainability in dealing with flora and fauna is therefore a top priority for them and the DIROSO winery is setting new standards in Valais in terms of winegrowing that is suitable for grandchildren.

The almost 4 hectares of vineyards are planted with grass and they do not use weedkillers. The traditional vines are only treated with organic products. They are also the driving force in Valais when it comes to natural viticulture with fungus-resistant grape varieties. These relatively unknown grape varieties allow them to produce organic grapes without the use of pesticides.

Since September 2019, the brothers Diego and Roman have been managing the company in the second generation. They are actively supported on site by Nina Baumann-Salzmann. Sonja Geoffray-Baumann is on hand to advise on oenological matters. She is also responsible for our fantastic label designs. Hans-Peter & Irene Baumann have - after twenty intensive years of development - taken their well-deserved retirement and are now taking it a little easier, but are still indispensable to the family business.

Incidentally, the company name was created back in 1989 and combines the first letters of the three siblings Diego, Roman & Sonja.

Zweigelt

«Still an insider tip in the Valais»

The Zweigelt grape variety, a new Klosterneuburg cultivar derived from the red wine varieties St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch, is now the most widespread red wine variety in Austria. It has now also found its way from Austria to us in Valais, but is still considered an insider tip here!

Zweigelt produces fruity, warm, full-bodied wines with an attractive acidity. The light aromas of sour cherry, vanilla, blackberry and walnut are accompanied by soft tannins.
