Cuvée Sélène

Cave Caloz, Miège
Description (detail)

The Cuvée Sélène is a wine made only from Cabernet Franc and vinified without any oenological aids in accordance with ASVN specifications. It is a natural cuvée without sulphur, with notes of leather, black fruit, paprika and warm spices on the nose. In the mouth, the natural CO2 of the wine, which has not been degassed, is surprising and we therefore strongly recommend decanting it in its youth. It shows a complex and powerful fruit and a mouth characterized by a large but flattering tannic mass.

Here are the Robert Parker Wine Advocate's tasting comments on the 2017 vintage: The wine has a deep, dark color and opens with a clear, pure and fresh sour cherry bouquet. On the palate, it is lean, fresh and elegant, a bone-dry, lush and elegant red wine with fine tannins and stimulating salty notes, but without chocolate or roasted flavors. The perfectly balanced wine shows remarkable purity and finesse, and its beautiful fruit of cherries and black berries is fleshy and authentic. A beautiful red wine with a tangy finish that is an excellent accompaniment to meat and cheese.

More about the wine cellar

Cave Caloz

The Caloz family has been practicing environmentally friendly viticulture for three generations. The focus is on protecting the earth and people. From hand-picked grapes, which are processed in their own cellar, they produce wines that give pleasure. The wine cellar is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, which is characterized by passion and hard work.

Sandrine Caloz took over the winery in 2013 after completing her studies in viticulture and oenology. After an internship in Thurgau and a trip to Australia, she returned to the family business. She is fascinated by the diversity of Valais grape varieties and the limestone terroir of the region. Every vintage offers her a new challenge and the chance to express her experiences in wine.

Sandrine is one of the best organic winegrowers in Switzerland. She owes this dedication to her father Conrad, who partially converted the winery to organic back in the 1990s. The entire winery has been certified by "Bio Suisse" since 2017. In 2019, she was named "Swiss Organic Winemaker of the Year". Despite challenges such as the lack of water in Valais, Sandrine sees the soil as a valuable heritage that contributes to the quality of the grapes.

The plots around Miège are full of fragrant herbs and flowers that grow between the rows of vines. Once a year, you even come across sheep in the vineyards. The advantage: they fertilize the soil and keep it free of weeds. "And they bring life to the vineyard," adds Sandrine Caloz ambiguously. She is more than enthusiastic about her work here in Valais. By the diversity of the Valais grape varieties, but also by the exclusive, very calcareous terroir of the Sierre region. No less exciting for the dynamic winemaker: the challenges and opportunities that each vintage brings with it - she wants to express nothing less than the experience of an entire year in her wines.

More about the grape variety

Cabernet Franc

«Frugal globetrotter»

Cabernet Franc is not as widespread as the better-known Cabernet Sauvignon, but it is more frugal in terms of climatic requirements. To this day, it is one of the six grape varieties that may be used for red wines in Bordeaux (the other varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot). Cabernet Franc is a popular blending wine, especially in France and Italy. Compared to Cabernet Sauvignon, the tannin content is lower, the wines have significantly less astringency and are therefore drinkable younger.

The grape variety Cabernet Franc is known as the forefather of Cabernets - especially Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. But the grape variety Merlot also descends in part from the Cabernet Franc. The other part leads to the Magdeleine Noire des Charentes, a grape variety that is probably extinct today.

Cabernet Franc is vinified into pleasant, juicy red wines with good body, which bring an exceptional taste experience. Cabernet Franc is known for its typical raspberry aroma. In addition, aromas of currant leaves as well as strawberries, liquorice and violets are often found in the red wines of this grape variety.
