zero

Description (detail)

After two years of aging in barrique barrels, the four Cal varieties produce a surprisingly full-bodied and complex red wine of international caliber.

Zero use of pesticides! Thanks to resistant varieties and natural vegetation, we can do without plant protection measures in these plots. This also pleases the magnificent kingfisher, which adorns the Zero label and occasionally lurks around the DIROSO vineyards near Leuk in search of prey.

Pressed from the innovative grape varieties Cal 1-36, Cal 1-28, Cal 1-22, and Cal 1-15 from Swiss breeder Valentin Blattner.

Words from the winemaker

What Roman Baumann says about this wine

Although 100% of the grapes come from Valais, in a blind tasting the wine would be more likely to be found in Bordeaux or Piedmont.

Our story

What connects us with this winery...

Our employee Augusto often works at the Diroso winery in his free time and he introduced us to it. We admire the Baumann family's great commitment to sustainability in dealing with flora and fauna and we can particularly recommend their white PIWI wines to you.

DIROSO Winery

As winegrowers, the Baumann family works in and with nature all year round. Sustainability in dealing with flora and fauna is therefore a top priority for them and the DIROSO winery is setting new standards in Valais in terms of winegrowing that is suitable for grandchildren.

The almost 4 hectares of vineyards are planted with grass and they do not use weedkillers. The traditional vines are only treated with organic products. They are also the driving force in Valais when it comes to natural viticulture with fungus-resistant grape varieties. These relatively unknown grape varieties allow them to produce organic grapes without the use of pesticides.

Since September 2019, the brothers Diego and Roman have been managing the company in the second generation. They are actively supported on site by Nina Baumann-Salzmann. Sonja Geoffray-Baumann is on hand to advise on oenological matters. She is also responsible for our fantastic label designs. Hans-Peter & Irene Baumann have - after twenty intensive years of development - taken their well-deserved retirement and are now taking it a little easier, but are still indispensable to the family business.

Incidentally, the company name was created back in 1989 and combines the first letters of the three siblings Diego, Roman & Sonja.

«Grape varieties with resistance properties»

Many well-known European grape varieties are susceptible to disease and have to be treated with pesticides more or less often, depending on the climate and weather conditions. For several years now, there has been a promising alternative: PIWI stands for «fungus-resistant vines». These new varieties, also known as hybrids or interspecific varieties, are the result of crosses between European vines and fungus-resistant American vines. The advantages of PIWI vines are obvious. They save on sprays, reduce tractor journeys and thus energy expenditure and soil pollution. In addition, beneficial insects in the vineyard are spared.

The higher yield security and the reduced plant protection costs also make PIWI grapes economically interesting. Nature, winegrowers and consumers win. In organic viticulture, where no synthetic chemical sprays are allowed, but copper and sulphur solutions, which are also not without problems, are permitted, great hopes are placed on PIWI vines.
